Just up a steep, sandy slope along the North Fork, where the wind blows off Long Island Sound, the Macari family cultivates wines that are known for their elegance and individuality. Macari wines reflect the family tradition of making each glass distinctive, each meal a celebration.

The history of Macari Wines reaches back to the 30’s and 40’s when Joseph Macari Sr. made wine with his father and grandfather in their basement in Corona, Queens. They bottled the wine by hand and Joseph sold it to neighbors and friends. In the mid 60’s he purchased a 500-acre former potato farm on Long Island Sound. It would be another 30 years before he began to realize his dream of growing grapes and making wine. The farm was mostly fallow until 1995 when his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Jr. and Alexandra Macari, moved with their four children to the North Fork to begin planting vines.

The Macari tradition has always been to feed many and to feed them well—food and wine made with care, with originality and finesse. For several generations they have carried on the Italian tradition of the shared meal, eaten slowly, with a glass of wine made for savoring and for conversation. Their commitment to excellence comes through in the making of their wines, excellence that begins in the cultivation of the loamy, sandy soil and carries through to the final product.

The turning point for Joseph Jr. was when he studied with world renowned visionaries in biodynamic viticulture, the late Alan York from California and Alvaro Espinoza from Chile. From his studies he developed a complex composting program that includes a herd of Long Horn cattle and a field devoted just to compost. His approach is ecological and holistic: he knows that the health of the plants and the character of the grapes depend on well-nourished, living soil, and that each step in the process contributes to the final product.

In some ways it’s been a long journey from that basement in Queens, but in other ways the values and the vision are the same. Though there are always uncertainties from vintage to vintage, the Macari family believes that variation is character, challenge is character, hard work is character; they wouldn’t want to make wine anywhere else in the world. As owners and hands-on operators, they are dedicated to producing, age-worthy, world-class wines.
