We here on Long Island know that 2013 is an outstanding vintage – possibly our greatest ever. Further affirmation has come from Wine Enthusiast Magazine, who just released a new batch of outstanding scores. The reviews also highlight the age-worthy qualities of Long Island wines, so be sure to grab these wines for your cellar as they will continue to impress with time!
Raphael scored 90+ scores for eight of its wines. A 93 was awarded to the 2013 Primo Reserve Estate Bottled Red, described as a wine with “rich fruit and bold, mouth dampening tannins.” With “luxurious notes of vanilla, cedar and spice,” the 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received a score of 92, as did the 2013 Reserve Petit Verdot. 91’s were awarded to the 2013 Reserve Cabernet Franc, described as “bold, concentrated and a bit brawny, but irresistibly so, finishing with remarkable depth and persistence,” as well as the 2013 Reserve Malbec, the 2013 First Label Merlot and 2012 First Label Merlot. The 2014 Cabernet Franc was awarded a 90.
90 points was awarded to Macari’s 2013 Reserve Cabernet Franc, described as “elegant yet approachably juicy” as well as their “bold and richly textured” 2013 Reserve Chardonnay. The 2014 Katherine’s Field Sauvignon Blanc also received a score of 90.
Bedell’s 2014 Cabernet Franc, a wine that is “anchored by a taut frame of fine, firm tannins and cranberry acidity,” and the Anthony Nappa 2014 Ripasso Merlot, a “powerful Merlot” with “a distinctly bold, textured mouthfeel and firmness of tannin” also received scores of 90.
