The Long Island Wine Council today is releasing the Long Island Wine Country smartphone app. The new app, which will be free to the public via download from the various app stores, is available in iPhone, Blackberry and Android versions. Long Island is one of the first wine regions in the country to offer a smartphone app, putting the Long Island Wine Council on the cutting edge of using new technology to promote a wine region.
The app allows users to find wineries and plan their route using the map feature with GPS geo-locating technology. Each winery listing has extensive information about the winery, its wines, hours of operation, contact information, tour information and more.
Visitors to Long Island's wine region can also find other important information using the "Dining" and "Accomodations" tabs, again with map and geo-locating. It also allows them to browse a list of events at the wineries, keep a list of their favorite wineries, dining spots and places to stay in the "My Favorites" section, and share their trip info and pictures with friends via FaceBook, Twitter or Flickr.
Listings available through the app include the 47 member wineries of the Long Island Wine Council and more than 60 hotels, inns, bed & breakfasts, restaurants, pastry shops and wine bars, as well as constantly updated events listings.
The Long Island Wine Country app was developed and funded by the Long Island Wine Council on behalf of its members as a way to promote one of the premier wine producing regions in the U.S., a region that is only a few hours drive from one of the largest metro areas in the country and attracts thousands of visitors on any given weekend. The New York metropolitan region has long been on the leading edge of the media business, and the Long Island Wine Country app reflects the progressive thinking of the region's marketers in using "new" media to reach out to consumers.
The app was designed and produced by Cro2 Design in conjunction with Discover Anywhere Mobile. The president of Cro2 Design, Michael Croteau, is also president of Croteaux Vineyards and a board member of the Long Island Wine Council.
