Empire State Cellars has an opening for a cellar clerk. Applicants should be energetic, and show keen interest in New York State wine and wine regions. Duties will include tastings, sales, using the POS, and other general responsibilities such as restocking, washing glasses, dusting & vacuuming, etc. Weekends and closing shifts a must; also some holidays. Must be able to lift cases up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Must be 21.

We met on the softball diamond and discovered we had something else in common — a love for the music of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Moody Blues, folk and bluegrass, and anything with a strong melody and harmony. We started playing for live audiences in 2004 at cafes, vineyards, libraries, fairs, and festivals.

In Jamesport, the Jedediah Hawkins Inn will be opening its doors, offering a taste of Luce & Hawkins Restaurant and serving Keith Luce Wines (his private label)

In Mattituck, the Cedar House On Sound B&B will be hosting Noah’s, a Greenport Restaurant and serving the wines of Scarola Vineyards.

Further east, in Cutchogue, the Blue Iris B&B will have the Village Cheese Shop offering their samples and serving the wines of Peconic Bay Vineyards.

In Greenport, the Stirling House B&B has Alure Restaurant and its partner A Mano Restaurant as Water’s Crest Winery offers their vintages.

And in Orient, the historic Orient Inn has the North Fork Oyster Company and Old Field Vineyards offering tastings.

If you are traveling with groups, it is advisable that you purchase your tickets all at once to ensure that you travel the tour together as there will be five alternate starting points for the tour to ensure that no one venue is overcrowded during the day.

Alex Sipiagin was born on June 11, 1967 in Yaroslavl, Russia, a provincial city 150 miles from Moscow known for being home to one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, Leonid Sobinov, also Alex’s great-grand uncle. At 12 years of age, he began playing in a children’s orchestra, studying under the great symphonic trumpeter and teacher, Mikhael Tsamaiev, his first inspiration. It was shortly after entering a local musical college at age 15 that Sipiagin was introduced to and inspired by what few and rare taped recordings were available in Russia of bebop and other jazz music. He knew he had to go to Moscow for a chance to learn more, and at 16 auditioned for the Moscow Music Institute, where he beat out 50 other students to get in. There he combined his classical studies with explorations into jazz. At 19 and after receiving his Baccalaureate, Sipiagin served the mandatory 2 years in the Russian army and then, upon release, continued his classical training and music studies at the Gnessin Conservatory in Moscow, earning tuition on pop gigs and recording sessions.

In 1990, Alex won first place in a Russian young jazz players’ competition in Rostov City. That same year, with “Glasnost” in fully sway, he visited the United States for the first time, performing with a Russian student jazz band, Green Wave, when they were asked to headline the Corpus Christi Jazz Festival in Texas. He caught the attention and ears of many, and was invited to participate in the International Louis Armstrong Competition sponsored by the Thelonius Monk Institute in Washington D.C. Other trumpeters competing were those who would later become today’s prominent players such as Ryan Kaiser, Scott Wendtholt, Nicolas Payton, and others. Alex placed 4^th in the competition, and was presented a Bach trumpet by the legendary Clark Terry, the trumpet which he still plays to this day.

Following a challenging year, in 1991 Alex decided to pursue jazz to the next level and moved to New York City. He sat in on jam sessions until he snagged his first jazz gig in 1992, playing every Monday night at Sweet Basil with the Gil Evans Band directed by Miles Evans. Then in 1993 he became a member of Gil Goldstein’s Zebra Coast Orchestra, which replaced the Gil Evan’s Band slot on Monday nights at Sweet Basil. In 1994, Sipiagin became a regular member of the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band while performing also with drummer Bob Moses’ band, Mozamba. Trumpeters Earl Gardner and Randy Brecker introduced Sipiagin to become a member of the Mingus Big Band in 1995, of which he is still a regular member, as well as the Mingus Dynasty and Mingus Orchestra. Since 2000, Dave Holland invited him to be a regular member of his big band and currently with his various small groups, and in 2003 he recorded with Michael Brecker’s Quindectet, which he has heavily toured with alongside Michael Brecker’s Sextet. Alex has also performed with Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Aaron Neville and Elvis Costello, Michael Franks, Dave Sanborn, Deborah Cox, legendary producer Phil Ramone, etc. and many of the recordings he has been involved in has won Grammy’s.

As a soloist, Sipiagin has 11 recordings out to his credit, mostly with Criss Cross Jazz, as well as ArtistShare and Sunnyside, and has toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan and Russia with his group.

Today, Sipiagin lives in the North Fork of Long Island and continues to perform and tour with the Dave Holland groups, Mingus groups (and various others) as well as with his own solo projects worldwide.

The food-friendly whites made at Waters Crest in Cutchogue and sold in its adjacent tasting room, in the North Road Commons industrial park, are noteworthy for their texture.

This characteristic, known in wine jargon as mouth feel, significantly contributes to the pleasures of all the winery’s 2010 whites. Think of it as approximately the fluid equivalent of a ripe, soft, buttery avocado.

Waters Crest, which was founded in 2001, is owned by James Waters, a self-taught winemaker. It is tiny: only 48 cases of its 2010 Private Reserve chardonnay were made, for example.

By popular demand “Grandma” will be back on Sundays from 1 to 3 PM, beginning January 22, 2012 until April 15, 2012 demonstrating the art of preparing a 3-course Sunday dinner that will feature a different homemade pasta each week. Bakithi Kumalo (5 september – ) is a South African bassist, composer and vocalist who has worked with a wide variety of diverse artists including Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock,Chaka Khan, Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper and Paul Simon. Kumalo is most known for hisfretless bass playing on Paul Simon’s 1986 album Graceland, in particular the bass run on “You Can Call Me Al“.

He was born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg surrounded by relatives who loved music and actively performed, and got his first job at the age of 7 filling in for his uncle’s bass player. During the summer of 2006 he played with Paul Simon on tour.

Nilson Matta Brazilian Voyage

Nilson Matta has long been considered one of the greatest bass players in the world and since his arrival in New York in 1985 he has become the first call of many of the top US musicians. Nilson studied bass at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) with Sandrino Santoro, Brazil’s premier classical bass player. Since his arrival in New York 1985 he has become the first call of many of the top US musicians. His mastery of the instrument and unique sound have earned him a reputation as one of the industry’s most sought after players. Throughout his career, Matta has been the “go to” bassist for numerous top musicians from around the globe.

Nilson’s latest project, called Nilson Matta’s Brazilian Voyage, is an exciting group playing many of Matta’s original songs mixed with Brazilian standards. For this album, Nilson called Harry Allen, Anne Drummond, Klaus Mueller, Ze Mauricio and Mauricio Zotterelli into the studio. The album, produced by Nilson, is dedicated to his native country of Brazil. It will literally take the listener on a “Brazilian Voyage” through the many regions of that country.

East End Jazz
East End Jazz has at its core a great rhythm section specializing in jazz interpretations of the “Great American Songbook”. The trio has been performing on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Blackwell’s in Wading River for the past three years.
Pianist Larry Pearlstein, Bassist Bob Hartz and Percussionist Ed Balsamo have all been in the New York music scene for over forty years and are credited with performing with such artists as Clark Terry, Billy Taylor, Phil Woods, Thad Jones, Billy Watrous, Frank Foster and Lou Marini. In addition, Alto Sax player Mr. Leo Ursini will be joining the trio at Waters Crest. His credentials are too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say, he worked with Sinatra ‘Old Blue Eyes’ himself, among a myriad of others.
